Profiting From Terrorism: 'Boston Strong'

Jaylin Cloutier

The ability to understand emerging communication and media technologies, and the complex causes and opportunities of that evolution. This means to look deeper into communication tactics such as the media and see how issues may be handled. It’s important to understand how the mass media works and how world news can be translated throughout different media outlets or from different exposures of an issue.

This paper is called Profiting From Terrorism: ‘Boston Strong’. I took on the task of looking at the Boston Marathon Bombing at occurred in 2013 and seeing how the media affect its exposure and the response from the public on the devastating terrorist attack. Specifically, I focused on the campaign that shortly followed the bombing entitled “Boston Strong”. The original notion of the campaign was to raise money for those who were affected, and it was important to look at how the slogan was taken advantage of and lost its original purpose.

The Boston Marathon Bombing was a huge news story and went across many different mediums of media. Several media technologies were used to endorse and support the campaign, and it allow people to create their own opportunities by profiting off of an act of terrorism. All of this ties into the learning outcome and easily allows us to see the evolution of a terrorist attack and how the media can react.
