Career Development Project: Mock and Informational Interviews

Jaylin Cloutier

The ability to apply communication and media theories to critically analyze real-world issues and employ practical, innovative solutions. This means that it is critical to understand the importance of taking what has been learned in the classroom and from peers into real-world situations. Using the experience from collaboration and lecture-based information, preparation for the world beyond life here at Plymouth State University becomes a near-sighted goal rather than a long one.

This paper came from my Senior Seminar class where we worked on this Career Launch Project. Before this paper, two other parts of the project occurred first. The first part entailed finding relevant job postings and understanding the language and required skills that are in most occupations. The second part was about buildings résumés and learning how to efficiently write cover letters. This third and final part focused on the interview process. I started by working with my peers to conduct mock interviews based on questions that were developed within the group. From there, we recorded our interviews in order to watch them back and see our strengths and weaknesses. Lastly, I interviewed someone who has had experience in hiring people and reviewing résumés about their tips and tricks on the skill of interviewing.

This project was able to teach me important skills in order to succeed in the real world. As a communications major, it is extremely important and beneficial to know how to speak to others in a professional setting. A learning outcome focusing on analyzing real-world issues and being able to employ impractical and innovative solutions happened the most during this project.
